The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited is proud to announce that the RBC Centre has attained LEED® Gold Certification becoming the largest certified LEED for New Construction project in Canada. This award marks a special accomplishment for RBC Centre, a 1.2 million square foot office tower in downtown Toronto.

"Achieving LEED Gold Certification at RBC Centre is a major accomplishment and something our team is quite proud of," said Steven Sorensen, Vice President, Property Operations, Cadillac Fairview. "Cadillac Fairview has long been committed to environmental sustainability and RBC Centre was designed with sustainability built into every detail."

In order to achieve LEED Gold NC, RBC Centre had to meet strict, measurable benchmarks and earn credits in five categories - Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality.

The following green features helped RBC Centre meet the standards of the five LEED categories:

  • Sustainable Enwave Deep Lake Cooling System provides cost efficient cooling
  • Raised flooring for maximum HVAC distribution/energy conservation
  • Power conservation through indirect lighting/lighting sensors
  • Light shelves for natural light reflection and maximum penetration
  • Energy efficient exposed ceiling option
  • Non-toxic materials used in construction
  • Diversion of construction waste to recycling process
  • Energy-wise operational windows on lower floors
  • Sunshades on the podium floors
  • Emergency power provided by four bi-fuel diesel generators
  • Six fresh air changes per hour
  • Fabric blinds on windows to respond to exterior light conditions
  • Storage facility for bicycles

The RBC Centre achieved a predicted 40 per cent energy cost savings and 47 per cent indoor water savings. The Centre will be pursuing LEED for Commercial Interiors certification as well.
